Around Town: Molten Chocolate Cakery, Seattle

a

Seattle is filled with unique little shops tucked behind tree-lined streets, so when I found Molten Chocolate Cakery, I could not have been more pleased. The cakery is decorated with charming trinkets and cozy wooden tables and chairs, and the chocolate aroma greets you at the door. I was tempted to order everything on the menu because they had one of the best selections of desserts I have seen in a long time: milkshakes, cake, cookies, pudding, ice cream…tell me when to stop. Order one of their thick milkshakes, rich chocolate molten lava cakes, or gooey cookies and you’ll have yourself a decadent afternoon treat. I am such a fan of this place, and the next time I am in Seattle craving molten chocolate cake (which is almost always), you’ll find me here.

P.S. Since this week seems to be chocolate-themed, check out Chocolate Croissants for more sweetness.

That’s a Wrap!

Public market

Flowers at Pike Place

When your week consists of beautiful flowers like the ones above, you know it’s been a great one. These tulips are just more proof that spring is here and that it is time to do some spring cleaning and display flowers around the kitchen, living room, and nightstand. Flowers are such a simple way to brighten up your life. I don’t usually do much to celebrate Easter, but this weekend I’ll celebrate in my own way by finally catching up on some movies and reading with a large glass of iced chai by my side.

Before that, though, it’s time to wrap up the week with a recap…

* Blue skies above Seattle [1st photo].

* Stunning Easter Eggs.

* Fresh flowers at Pike Place Market [2nd photo].

* 45 minutes of Woody Allen umming, hmming, and stammering.

* Loving these adorable Baked by Melissa Easter cupcakes!

* Best food apps for travelers – this will definitely come in handy!

* Coming up on the last couple of days of #ADashofMarch.

* Movies this weekend: Zero Dark Thirty & This is 40.

Have a happy Easter weekend! How are you celebrating the holiday?

Around Town: Din Tai Fung

Din Tai Fung is known for their delicate and delicious soup dumplings. As a huge fan, I have been to Din Tai Fung more times than I can count on my fingers and toes. When I am not at Din Tai Fung, you can find me dreaming of their fresh juicy pork dumplings and red bean desserts. In both the Seattle and Arcadia locations that I have been to, there is a glass window that customers can look through to see how the dumplings are made. Everything is hand rolled and made to perfection.

Din Tai Fung originated in Taiwan, but due to its rising popularity, several more locations have opened around the world, including the United States (Seattle and Arcadia), Australia, China,  Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. I hope they open more locations in the U.S. I promise, once you try just one dumpling, you will be forever hooked.

Setting: Modern and clean

Good for: Family dinner, pre-movie dinner, table for one, date night

What to order: Cucumber, Juicy Pork Dumplings, Shrimp and Pork Shaomai, Steamed Mashed Red Bean Buns, Sweet Red Bean Rice Bun, Shrimp Fried Rice, Garlic Green Beans

Downsides: The wait! I’ve waited up to an hour for a table. Din Tai Fung does not take reservations, so plan accordingly

Recommend: Ordering some Red Bean Buns to go – they make for great midnight snacks!

Around Town: Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar, Seattle

One of my all-time favorite romantic comedies is Sleepless in Seattle. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are a perfect movie couple, and this beautiful story transcends the notion that geography determines who you’ll find and fall in love with. The movie also includes my two favorite cities, Seattle and New York City.

During one scene in the movie, Tom Hanks and Rob Reiner have lunch. This restaurant is located in Pike Place Market, at the Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar. There are even placards that show where the two actors sat during filming. I decided to figure out where this restaurant was, and went downtown for a relaxing Sunday brunch.

The food was decent, but I think most people go to the restaurant because of the movie. The portions are bigger than they need to be - I had the Breakfast Sandwich (came with 2 sandwiches) with hot chocolate. The view from the downstairs and upstairs tables is stunning, especially on a clear, sunny day. The Athenian Restaurant has a classic Seattle feel to it, which makes it worth visiting, but I probably won’t be going back for the food.
