Around Town: Asiate, New York City

aWhen it comes time to celebrating something, dining at a nice restaurant is such a treat. New York City’s Asiate at the Mandarin Oriental is a great place to dine when you want to celebrate, have a private meal, or just enjoy good food and an incredible view of Manhattan. It is one of the greatest views of Central Park and the gorgeous city skyline. Not only that, but the food is seriously good – the brunch is not to be missed. With a steaming cup of hot chocolate, freshly baked croissants, and waffles that may just be my all-time favorite, Asiate is truly a delight.

Wonder Wheel - contrasted

Santa Monica

I hope you all had a lovely Easter weekend. I was having an Asian food kick for some reason, and I enjoyed every minute of it. We are in the final home stretch until summer, and the sunny days make even the most mundane tasks worthwhile. I have finally adjusted to Daylight Savings, and it is so much easier to wake up earlier. I’m looking forward to a weekend filled with even more food, getting out in nature for a couple of hours, and catching up on more recent releases. For now, wrapping up the week with a recap…

* Lucille Ball roasting her close friends – gotta love her!

* When two artistic geniuses meet.

* Happy Endings returned to television last week and it did not disappoint.

* If you enjoy Blue Bottle Coffee, you’ll enjoy this article.

* Dreaming of hot summer days on Coney Island [1st photo].

* Enjoyed a little too much Din Tai Fung this week, with desserts from an Asian bakery to really top things off.

* Breakfast with a view [2nd photo].

* Watched This is 40 and there were moments of pure hilarity. An entertaining weekend watch.

Have a great weekend!

Manhattan

foggy nyc -1

I’ve been away from New York City for less than a month and I already miss the energy and city lights. The opening of Manhattan (1979) pretty much says it all:

“Chapter One. He adored New York City. He idolized it all out of proportion. Eh uh, no, make that he, he romanticized it all out of proportion. Better. To him, no matter what the season was, this was still a town that existed in black and white and pulsated to the great tunes of George Gershwin.” – Woody Allen in Manhattan

Around Town: Golden Unicorn, New York City

Mindy Project

During my trip to New York City a couple of weekends ago, I made sure to stop by Golden Unicorn in Chinatown for a dim sum lunch. I am always looking for great dim sum, so when I heard Mindy Kaling mention this restaurant in her show, The Mindy Project, obviously I had to see what it was all about! While some of the dishes arrived lukewarm, overall the ingredients tasted fresh. There was also a really great variety of dim sum dishes and desserts, which I always appreciate.

The restaurant was decorated in an authentic Asian style with tables very close to one another. Golden Unicorn has a pretty amazing system – as soon as we were finished eating, the table was cleared in seconds and another group was eating by the time we were at the elevators. Even though dim sum restaurants are typically noisy and crowded, I love the carts full of dim sum rolling by the tables – I find it not only charming in its own way, but it means you can have food within minutes of sitting down. And whenever I go for dim sum, I’m always ready to eat.

For all the time I have spent in New York City, it’s hard to believe I haven’t stumbled upon Golden Unicorn yet. I tried Dim Sum Go Go, which is right across the street, but I don’t recommend it because there are not as many options and there are no dim sum carts (again, one of the best parts of the whole experience). If you’re looking for good dim sum in New York City, give Golden Unicorn a shot. However, be warned of the fast pace and pushy crowds.

That’s a Wrap!

This week was a blur. Last weekend I traveled to the East Coast for a quick getaway, and as I expected, it was filled with incredible food and quality entertainment. This weekend will be filled with lots of work, but not without a little adventure and fun – trying out a new sushi place and spending time with friends. Until then, wrapping up the week with a recap…

* Saw Scarlett Johansson star in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in NYC.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

* A classic Valentine’s Day treat for a crafty and cute party.

Preparation for Vday Party

* This Sunday is the Academy Awards – finally! For a delicious treat, try making Golden Caramel Popcorn.

* These Eleni’s ‘Best Picture’ cookies are too perfect.

* Watched the Beyoncé: Life is But a Dream documentary that premiered on HBO last Saturday. Pretty good overall, there were definitely some inspiring moments.

* I saw Argo, but I haven’t seen Zero Dark Thirty yet. For those who have, what are your thoughts on this article?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day! This Oscar-nominated animated short film is INCREDIBLE!

I love this short film for several reasons:

1.) Talent. The animators and director David Kahrs responsible for this amazing short film are clearly so talented. It’s always a pleasure witnessing great work.

2.) Love at first sight. So sweet.

3.) New York City. This story takes place in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Happy February! February is the month of footballs, purple and green beads, red and pink hearts, birthday cakes, and the celebration of a new year (Chinese New Year!). There are many great things to look forward to this month, and each event is so different that the days will fly by. Bring it on, February, we’re ready for all that you have to offer.

In the meantime, wrapping up the week with a recap

* After reading The Night Circus, I am loving all things circus-related, including these Vintage Circus Napkins.

* Prepare for the Super Bowl this weekend with some New Orleans-inspired snacks!

* I love this golden banana bowl.

* For when you 1) don’t have time to make a whole back of chocolate chip cookies and 2) only want a quick snack and 3) are feeling selfish and don’t want to share.

* If you are in New York City or Los Angeles, go see Girls Against Boys! It’s a limited release, for now.

* I am having a crepe moment (photo above).

* Such a great article re: the Oscars. I can’t wait to see Seth MacFarlane’s opening monologue…

* The Anne Hathaway parody of ‘I Dreamed a Dream.’

* Oh, high school…these celebrities’ high school yearbook photos are hilarious.

* Cute Valentine’s Day DIY.

Have a great (Super Bowl) weekend!

Around Town: Ichibantei, New York City

a

When my friend offered to take me to ‘this amazing Japanese restaurant,’ I just let it happen. I eat any type of Japanese cuisine, so I wasn’t too concerned. Turns out, this place, called Ichibantei,  really was amazing. The restaurant itself is small, with a long bar facing the kitchen and windows, and only a couple of tables. Off to the side on a busy street in the East Village,  Ichibantei can be a little confusing to find. The service is great, you can take as long as you want to eat without interruption, and the food is seriously quality.

I recommend: Teriyaki Chicken (I’ve never had teriyaki chicken so juicy and delicious!), Oyako Don, and Katsu Don. Plus all the usual side dishes like edamame and miso soup.

I can’t even talk about Ichibantei without my mouth watering. I’ll just have to refer to these photos until I can go again.

Wrapping up the week with a recap…

·  Monday evening Chinese take-out and movie [1st photo]. What could be better? Watched Scent of a Woman starring Al Pacino. Amazing film, incredible actor.

·  Weekend brunch at Pastis - enjoyed the Eggs Benedict and the pancakes (which are some of the best pancakes I’ve ever had) [2nd photo].

·  Love this watermelon punch bowl. Here’s another way to use a watermelon for a party!

·  A Better Queue will be helpful for determining which movies to watch for my dinner and movie nights! My Netflix instant queue is already 20+ movies long.

·  Pair the best combination of ingredients with FoodPairing - what a useful resource!

·  Add a pop of color to your kitchen.

·  For an interesting documentary on ballet, check out First Position. It was very moving.

Have a fun and relaxing weekend!

Currently Craving: Annie Hall and Lobster

Lounging in this New York apartment | Munching on this Lobster | Laughing at Annie Hall

I saw Annie Hall for the first time in February. I had constantly read articles and books with references to one of Woody Allen’s most famous films, so I figured I needed to just watch it once and for all. Annie Hall is one of those movies that keep you guessing, smiling, and laughing the entire time. Diane Keaton and Woody Allen have an undeniable connection, and it is a true pleasure to see them together on-screen. One of the cutest and funniest scenes in the film is the one when Allen and Keaton (Alfie and Annie) are trying to cook lobster. In fact, this was the first scene filmed for the movie and Allen and Keaton’s laughter is spontaneous and genuine. When I crave New York City and a hilarious intellectual and physical sense of humor, I pop in a Woody Allen film. I crave these two things much too often.
