That’s a Wrap!

It is going to be a big movie weekend, and I am appreciative for the time off to visit the theater. I finally saw a movie last week and it really made me realize how much I miss the theater-going experience. In addition to movies, I intend to re-watch the entire 3 seasons of Arrested Development, probably with dim sum leftovers within reach. Have a wonderful weekend!

* This really is how I get sucked into an SVU marathon.

* I am officially obsessed with Arrested Development, and May 26 (the start of Season 4) cannot get here soon enough.

* Lavender lemonade: a perfect summer drink.

* Met Gala 2013 - I wasn’t very impressed with the theme and most of the dresses. My favorites: Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Alba, and Anne Hathaway.

* Indulged in one of the best chocolate lava cakes [photo above].

* Stoked to see The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3 this weekend!

* A great place for Mother’s Day brunch. Here are some other ideas!

* Saw Mud last weekend, and it was visually stunning and a great slice-of-life film.

Around Town: Umami Burger, Santa Monica

If you asked me what I thought the best pizza was, I would say Pizzeria Mozza. If you asked me what my favorite burger was, I’d be torn between a couple of places, but after trying the Cali Burger at Umami Burger, I’d say that there is a clear winner (so far…). I had constantly heard good things about Umami Burger, so when I was in L.A. over the weekend I made sure to include it in my lunch plans. I went to the Santa Monica location and only had to wait fifteen minutes for a table. As soon as I took my first bite, I knew what all the hype was about. The house-made American cheese literally melted in my mouth and the slow-roasted tomato added an extra kick of flavor to an already delicious burger. Also, the cheesy tater tots left me speechless. There are no words. Seriously, if these pictures don’t make your mouth water, I don’t know how to help you.

· · ·

Setting: There are many Umami Burger locations – Santa Monica’s Umami was a part of the Fred Segal store

Good for: Afternoon trip to L.A., pre-movie dinner with friends, table for one

What to order: Socal/Cali Burger, Truffle Burger, Cheesy Tater Tots (if they aren’t on the menu, ask for them), and lemonade

Downsides: From most people who I’ve talked to, there is usually a wait for a table (in my case, the wait wasn’t too bad)

Recommend: Going hungry…you will definitely leave full!

Strawberry Lemonade

Although we are not even close to summer, for me lemonade is a year-round drink. I kind of like acidic-tasting drinks like grapefruit juice, and lemonade fits right into that category. When I get bored with traditional yellow lemonade, strawberry lemonade is a convenient switch-up. I adore strawberries on their own, but they add a fruity and healthy taste to this sugary and refreshing drink.

You’ll need:

1.5 cups of fresh lemon juice (from about 12 lemons)
1.5 cups sugar
2 cups of strawberries (cut)
8 cups of water

What to Do:

1. In a large, deep saucepan, boil the 8 cups of water and the 1.5 cups of sugar
2. Remove sugar and water from heat once boiled, and add 2 cups of cut strawberries
3. Add the fresh squeezed lemon juice to saucepan, and cool to room temperature
4. Add ice to mixture and serve with fresh strawberries and lemon slices

Watermelon Breeze

A simple way to keep cool in the summer is to wash down the heat with a refreshing drink. To beat the 80 degree weekend heat, I used this delicious recipe that combined some of my favorite ingredients: watermelon, lemon, mint, and brown sugar. In preparation for an event later this week, I tested these fun “Hello, My Name Is” drink tags. I love that this classic name tag can actually be used in a place that is not awkward to look at: the bottom of a glass. Add a slice of lemon or small chunk of watermelon to the side of your cup, et viola – your tasty summer refresher is ready to be enjoyed!
