Around Town: I Like Pie, Claremont

b

A few weeks ago, I did not like pie. At Thanksgiving and other holidays and celebrations where pie was involved, I would opt out of dessert or find an alternative, like chocolate cake or ice cream. However, after passing by I Like Pie, an adorable pie shop in Claremont, I decided to give pie another chance. After my first bite of the Caramel Apple Crunch, I may have found my new favorite dessert (five pies in seven days confirmed this). The Triple Berry and Strawberry Rhubarb pies are also delicious. Served with a huge scoop of Dr. Bob’s vanilla ice cream and you’ve got yourself a dessert that is impossible to pass up.

Flavor of the Month: Pomegranate

6. Coconut, Pomegranate, and Lime Kanten

While there are many exciting events in February, Valentine’s Day is one of the most celebrated holidays around the world. In honor of love, one of the major associations of Valentine’s Day, pomegranate is February’s Flavor of the Month.

Did you know that in certain cultures, pomegranates symbolize love and fertility? In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the pomegranate fruit is referenced. In Act 3, Scene 5, Juliet says to Romeo, “Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day. / It was the nightingale, and not the lark, / That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear. / Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate tree. / Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.” In this section, pomegranate symbolizes love - from true love to innocent love to forbidden love.

Pomegranates are not only delicious, but they have a beautiful red color that makes the seeds stand out in meals and desserts. If you’re looking to make a treat for yourself, to cook a meal for a loved one, or just to eat this sweet fruit’s seeds on its own, pomegranates provide diverse and tasty flavors that you’ll absolutely loveWill you eat pomegranate this month?

That’s a Wrap!

It’s finally the weekend! That means it’s time to get serious about the holidays. This includes a lot of baking, catching up on my endless movie list, putting up the Christmas tree, and finishing up some scarf-knitting projects. What are you all up to for the weekend? Without further ado, a wrap-up from the week…

Peppermint Icicles?! – these look awesome, but I just envision a messy, sticky fail.

Peppermint ice cream and hot cocoa. Add this to the Flavor of the Month!

• Can’t wait to start watching Homeland over winter break.

Film and Food Gift Guide for those who are still shopping for presents.

• Movies I can’t wait to see: Hitchcock, Skyfall (still..), Zero Dark Thirty, Anna Karenina, and Silver Linings Playbook. If you haven’t seen Lincoln and Argo already, make time for them this weekend – they are both (rightly) nominated for Golden Globes.

Have a great weekend!

Flavor of the Month: Peach

1. Homemade Peach Ice Cream / 2. Rosewater Yogurt with White Peaches and Blueberries / 3. BBQ Pizza with Peaches and Ham / 4. Vanilla and Peach Mojitos /
5. Spicy Peach and Cucumber Salsa

Peaches are a great summer fruit that can be used for meals, desserts, and drinks. Peaches add sweetness to a cocktail, a unique twist to average pizza, and a fruity kick to salsa. I always consider peaches to be a real treat because it can be tricky to find them when they are ripe. I usually end up waiting a couple of days before using my peaches since I prefer them really soft and juicy. Now that peaches are finally ready for eating, buy a couple and start enjoying! What are your favorite peach recipes?

Around Town: Coolhaus Ice Cream Truck

New York City in the summer means inescapable heat and a never-ending desire for ice cream. When I passed a bright pink ice cream truck, I had to stop. Turns out, the truck was Coolhaus Ice Cream, where you construct your own cookie ice cream sandwich.  I chose chocolate chip cookies with the Dirty Mint ice cream (which tastes like a fresh peppermint garden). The ice cream and cookies are delicious individually, and together they are an unbeatable combination. Also, the wrapper that the ice cream sandwich comes in is edible. Coolhaus isn’t just in NYC – they have trucks in Los Angeles, Dallas, and Austin! With flavors like Fried Chicken and Waffles, Lychee Martini Sorbet, and Chocolate Molten Cake, I clearly need to hunt down this truck again for another summer treat.

If you are in NYC and want a different kind of summer treat, try the frrrozen hot chocolates at Serendipity 3!

Film Icon: Doris Day

I have been a big fan of Doris Day ever since I was a little girl and first saw the film, Pillow Talk. Doris Day represents the girl-next-door, and always brings a lightheartedness and charm to the screen. Born in 1924 in Ohio, Doris had always been involved in the arts, whether it was through dance, music, or acting. Doris was initially a singer, which led to a career as an actress later in life. She does a stellar job with her roles in romantic comedy movies, and she always lights up the screen with her grace. As if there is even more reason to adore her, Doris is also an animal lover and advocate. In the late 1970′s, she started a foundation called the Doris Day Animal League which merged with the Humane Society in 2006. While Doris is no longer active in the film industry, she spends her time helping animals across the country.

1. Calamity Jane (1953) and Cowboy Boot Cookies | 2. Pillow Talk (1959) and Rum and Raisin Pillows| 3. Send Me No Flowers (1964) and Vanilla Mascarpone with Edible Flowers| 4. Lover Come Back (1961) and Chocolate and Peppermint Patties | 5. The Doris Day Show (1968-1973) and Sweet Corn Ice Cream

Flavor of the Month: Blueberry

Blueberry Cream Cheese Macarons | Blueberry Barbecued Chicken | Blueberry Muffins | Blueberry Pie Ice Cream |  Creamy Orange and Blueberry Pops

I can’t believe summer is actually here. It feels like last summer was just yesterday. With summer comes icy treats, barbecues on warm nights, and fresh fruit. This season I plan on eating as many berries as possible, not only because they are great for your health, but because they add sweetness to any meal or dessert. While blueberries have more nutritional value when eaten raw, they are excellent additions to baked desserts and frozen treats. Whether you get your blueberries by hand-picking them or by buying them at the grocery store, definitely try to incorporate this fruit into your diet as much as possible!

Around Town: Frosted Cupcakery, Los Angeles

I am always on the lookout for great desserts, mostly of the variety that involve chocolate or ice cream (preferably both). When my friend and I drove by Frosted Cupcakery, the adorable logo and aqua exterior lured us in. Always willing to try new things, we decided to try the ice cream cupcakes, which may have been the best decision of the day. Frosted Cupcakery also has many other cupcake options that don’t involve ice cream, as well as tiny cupcakes for your dog (appropriately named “pupcakes”).

I wish my birthday was every day just so I could eat ice cream cake. These ice cream cupcakes were miniature versions of that. The ice cream didn’t melt right away or make the cupcakes soggy, and the consistency of the frosting and cupcake was just right. I loved the chocolate/chocolate buttercream filled with mint chip ice cream, and my friend enjoyed the red velvet/cream cheese filled with vanilla bean ice cream.

Setting: Bright and cheery, small with enough room to sit down

Good for: Quick pick-up, after lunch dessert, pre/post movie treat, day date

What to order: Ice cream cupcakes

Downsides: Ice cream cupcakes are bigger than expected (though this could also be a good thing!)

Recommend: Saving room for dessert at lunch and dinner and making the effort to get these ice cream cupcakes

Friday Features

Halloween is just around the coroner and I can’t wait! The good thing about fall is that October and November blend well into one another so that I can keep my pumpkin spice candles on my desk without feeling out-of-tune with the seasons. This weekend I am going to bake, bake, bake and get the house ready for one of my all-time favorite holidays. The countdown is almost up – enjoy the last few days! In the meantime, these are the things I’ve been watching + craving.

♥ Mochi Ice Cream

♥ Ice Cream Sandwich Pillow - perfect for cuddling up with when watching Halloween movies!

♥ Trailer for In the Land of Blood and Honey – Angelina Jolie wrote and directed this film

♥ Halloween Candy Jars – a great way to serve candy at your Halloween party this weekend!

♥ Inspiration picture: Glitter cake pops

Pumpkin Bowls

Now is the time of month to start adorning the house with Halloween decor and lining the porch with skillfully (or not) carved pumpkins. If you don’t feel up to carving a face or any other design into the side of the pumpkin, make a bowl out of it! Cut the top off and scoop out the gooey insides of the pumpkin as you normally would. Here’s a handy how-to to get you going. Cut a shell-like wave, zig-zag design, or squares on the rim of the pumpkin to give it a little extra something. Here are some great ways to put your pumpkin to work:

♦ Candy for trick-or-treaters

♦ Serve as an appetizer dish

♦ Pumpkins bring soup bowls to a whole new level

♦ A new way to serve your sorbet to admiring guests

♦ Chip and dip at the next sports party or family event

♦ Put your smoothie or juice in the pumpkin and drink directly from there – an alternative cup!
