Around Town: I Like Pie, Claremont

b

A few weeks ago, I did not like pie. At Thanksgiving and other holidays and celebrations where pie was involved, I would opt out of dessert or find an alternative, like chocolate cake or ice cream. However, after passing by I Like Pie, an adorable pie shop in Claremont, I decided to give pie another chance. After my first bite of the Caramel Apple Crunch, I may have found my new favorite dessert (five pies in seven days confirmed this). The Triple Berry and Strawberry Rhubarb pies are also delicious. Served with a huge scoop of Dr. Bob’s vanilla ice cream and you’ve got yourself a dessert that is impossible to pass up.

That’s a Wrap!

I am usually an early riser no matter what day of the year it is, and Thanksgiving is no exception. I rise with the sun just to make sure to catch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on television. If I can, I try to get something baking in the oven so the house smells delicious for the long day of cooking ahead. I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving, and if you’re hitting up the stores today, stay safe. I’ll probably stick to online shopping where it’s warm and the lines are non-existent. Without further ado, wrapping up the week with a recap…

· Made a quick trip to Boston - I have missed the crisp autumn weather that California seriously lacks.

· It’s Starbucks red cups season and it’s just for that reason alone that I’ve doubled my intake of hot chocolate and milk steamers.

· Lollipop corn dogs – not your typical lollipop but it was still delicious!

· I’ve picked up (after a 1.5 year break) knitting again – it’s something fun to do while watching movies. I got through 1/8 of my scarf while watching Good Will Hunting and Say Anything.

· Early morning egg sliders from Some Crust are the best way to start the day.

· One of my favorite pictures from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Have a wonderful weekend! What are you doing today?

Around Town: Jeannine’s, Santa Barbara

During my long weekend drive up the northern coast, I made a stop in Santa Barbara for the morning. Since I am a breakfast person, it was important to find a place that served a breakfast for champions, especially since I had a long drive ahead of me. Jeannine’s Restaurant is a favorite among locals, which was clear after observing many customers saying hello to one another by their first names. Jeannine’s is a charming place to eat, and the food definitely made the visit worth it.

Setting: Charming and airy

Good for: Family meals, brunch with friends

What to order: Famous Banana Kahlua French Toast and Biscuits and Gravy

Downsides: You stand in line to order at the register and then find a table where you can sit

Recommend: Getting to brunch early before the crowds

A Long Weekend

My collection of photos from a long weekend driving up the northern coast, which included incredible food, Blue Bottle coffee, the ocean, and beautiful scenery.

Around Town: Some Crust, Claremont

Some Crust is the hidden gem in the Claremont Village. Mainly frequented by the Claremont Colleges students, professors, and nearby residents, Some Crust is tucked between a Mexican restaurant (which I don’t recommend) and a hair salon. I heard about it through word of mouth, and I don’t even want to think of what my life would be like today if I hadn’t known about this seriously incredible bakery (kind of joking). Not only are their cookies and brownies insanely delicious, but they have one item in particular that is a daily bestseller: egg sliders. Egg sliders are basically breakfast sandwiches that you custom order, and depending on what time you go, the wait can be up to 45 minutes (yes, I’ve waited…). Some Crust offers a variety of great sandwiches and drinks, also. Really, you can’t lose when you come here, and you certainly won’t regret whatever you order – no matter how long the wait.

Setting: Cozy and intimate

Good for: Breakfast dates with friends, solo meals, and mid-day snacks

What to order: Egg Sliders, Pesto Chicken Sandwich, any of their baked goods – too many choices to just pick one

Downsides: The wait…I recommend getting there either really early (6:30 – 7am) or 10am. Some Crust serves egg sliders until dinner, so don’t worry about only getting there in the morning

Recommend: Egg Slider, Iced Latte, and a cookie to top it all off!

Around Town: Umami Burger, Santa Monica

If you asked me what I thought the best pizza was, I would say Pizzeria Mozza. If you asked me what my favorite burger was, I’d be torn between a couple of places, but after trying the Cali Burger at Umami Burger, I’d say that there is a clear winner (so far…). I had constantly heard good things about Umami Burger, so when I was in L.A. over the weekend I made sure to include it in my lunch plans. I went to the Santa Monica location and only had to wait fifteen minutes for a table. As soon as I took my first bite, I knew what all the hype was about. The house-made American cheese literally melted in my mouth and the slow-roasted tomato added an extra kick of flavor to an already delicious burger. Also, the cheesy tater tots left me speechless. There are no words. Seriously, if these pictures don’t make your mouth water, I don’t know how to help you.

· · ·

Setting: There are many Umami Burger locations – Santa Monica’s Umami was a part of the Fred Segal store

Good for: Afternoon trip to L.A., pre-movie dinner with friends, table for one

What to order: Socal/Cali Burger, Truffle Burger, Cheesy Tater Tots (if they aren’t on the menu, ask for them), and lemonade

Downsides: From most people who I’ve talked to, there is usually a wait for a table (in my case, the wait wasn’t too bad)

Recommend: Going hungry…you will definitely leave full!

Around Town: Chinois Santa Monica

Santa Monica is incredible for a variety of reasons. Not only does Santa Monica have great beaches and shopping, but it also has great food. I have always been a fan of Wolfgang Puck’s restaurants, Spago in particular, so when my friend told me that one of her favorite restaurants was Chinois, a Wolfgang Puck American-Asian fusion restaurant, I made it my top food priority.

Chinois is a small restaurant that blends in with its surroundings, so if you’re distracted by what’s around you, you might miss it! My friends and I sat at the counter to watch the chefs work their magic - I highly recommend it because not only is it entertaining, but you can watch how your food is made. We saw lobsters cracked, salads chopped, fish dunked in boiling water, and ice cream scooped. At one point, one of the chefs started a big fire on the pan which was exciting to see from 7 feet away.

Because the restaurant is fusion, the taste of the main meals were different from anything I have ever tried before. First of all, the crispy spinach melts in your mouth, the lobster is covered in a smooth curry sauce, and rice is piled underneath it all for a seriously mouth-watering bite. The duck tasted like it was covered in a high quality rib sauce and the steamed bao was thick and soft. I can’t even talk about the chocolate lava cake without my mouth watering because it was the perfect combination of warm chocolate with a moist cake texture. Top off the meal with green tea, and call it a (very full, but satisfied) night! Next time I would love to try the grilled lamb chops with cilantro vinaigrette warm potato salad and the seared Maine scallops with Pad Thai noodles and lemon grass. As I looked around me when I was dining, every single plate that came from the kitchen looked absolutely delicious.

Setting: Small, intimate restaurant with Asian fusion offbeat decorations

Good for: Dinner with family and friends, date night

What to order: Roasted Cantonese duck with fresh plum sauce and steamed bao, Shanghai lobster with curry sauce and crispy spinach, and chocolate lava cake

Downsides: Pricing can be high

Recommend: Sharing dishes - the 3 of us ordered 2 main meals and 1 appetizer and finished everything; Sitting at the counter and watching the chefs make your meal!

{Ferris Wheel at the Santa Monica Pier}

I can’t express enough how odd it feels for the weeks to be going by so quickly. It feels just like yesterday I was at the Santa Monica Pier looking out into the horizon at the sunset and crashing waves. I love piers/beaches because not only are they relaxing, but everyone around you seems to fade away. All the kids splash around in the ocean acting like there’s no tomorrow. That kind of innocence and genuine “I don’t care who’s looking” is refreshing and inspiring. Here’s to a spontaneous and carefree weekend!

Inspiration on a Wednesday

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Are you still on track with your resolutions (read: goals – a much less intimidating/more inspiring word)? Today’s the day.

Fall Color Palette

I have amassed over 20 recipes that I want to try out, so I would love to find a day where I could just bake and cook all day long. While the California leaves have nothing on the East Coast trees, the air finally feels like autumn. I guess that is all I can really ask for considering shades of ruby and gold just won’t make it into my surrounding scenery. These pictures provide inspiration when Mother Nature doesn’t pull through.
