Around Town: Founding Farmers, Washington, D.C.

b

Washington, D.C. is gorgeous. The marble buildings, the historic neighborhoods, the powerful landmarks –  there are so many appealing factors to D.C. Not only are the sites and surroundings fantastic, but the food is equally impressive. One restaurant that is particularly memorable, especially for brunch, is Founding Farmers.

The restaurant is rustic and comfortable with cute decorations such as bird lights and sheep statues. For starters, I ordered beignets and the Farmers Cranberry Cucumber Cooler. I enjoyed the Traditional Eggs Benedict, which was nicely complimented by the fresh shredded leek hash browns. There are so many mouth-watering menu items, and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. I’m such a fan of this place, and the next time I’m in D.C., I will without a doubt be back for another satisfying meal.

If you’re in D.C. and have a sweet tooth, swing by Georgetown Cupcake for a midday treat.

Breakfast Highlights

bfast1It’s no secret that I love breakfast. Yes, there are a variety of foods to choose from, but just think of the liquids: juices, coffee, tea, milk, Bellinis, smoothies. Biting into a warm waffle covered in syrup, spreading butter and honey on a freshly toasted piece of bread, or wiping up the last bit of egg yolk with smoked ham – breakfast is simply the best. While I could eat breakfast at any time of the day, I prefer it just after the sun has risen. If I’m looking out over the Italian coast, peering over a Parisian balcony, or waking up to breakfast in bed? Even better.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day…everything I am currently ‘hearting.’ Wake up and make cute heart-shaped pancakes and waffles for a breakfast full of love or add a shot of love to your tea. Bundle up with a comfy throw while eating chocolates off of a heart-shaped plate. Go ahead and celebrate love tomorrow, and remind yourself of all the reasons why you love you. If you want to spread the love, send one of these sweet hearts to your mother, sister, or best girlfriend! xoxo

Casper & Ghost Treats

Ghost Pancakes| Spooky Ghost Pizza | Halloween Ghost Peep S’mores | Ghosts in the Graveyard Pudding Cups

Casper (1995) will always be one of those special Halloween movies – I mean, who doesn’t love a friendly ghost? If you are hosting a Halloween party or are just having a themed movie night, Casper and these ghostly treats are a great combination. Eat ghosts while you watch ghosts! The spooky ghost pizza is so creative and looks delicious, and the ghost pancakes are simple and clever. Even though Halloween is still 3 weeks away, it is never too early to start planning and getting excited for the spookiest night of the year.

Eat & Watch: French Toast and Kramer vs. Kramer

When I first watched Kramer vs. Kramer, I was moved by the heartfelt story and the father and son relationship. There is a certain scene where the father, played by Dustin Hoffman, and his son are making breakfast after the mother leaves the family. The father is making french toast, or as he calls it, “Folded French Toast,” for his son, and he has to fold the bread in half because he mixes the eggs and milk together in a coffee mug. While this would be a creative (yet messy) way to make breakfast, there is a much simpler and cleaner way to achieve the same delicious result. At the end of the movie (this is not a spoiler alert), the father and son duo are pros at making french toast the correct way (shallow bowl and all!), demonstrating how far they have progressed from their messy and frustrating beginning.

Check out the scene below:

You will need
:
8 slices of bread
7 eggs
3 tablespoons of 1/2 & 1/2 milk
Cinnamon

1. In a shallow bowl, use a fork or whisk to lightly beat the eggs and milk together.

2. Add cinnamon (as much as you prefer) to the egg and milk mixture.

3. Dip the slices of bread into batter (on both sides). Let the egg mixture soak into the bread, but be careful not to soak the bread too long as it might get soggy and fall apart.

4. Place battered bread on a hot, buttered skillet until the bread is brown on both sides.

5. Lightly sprinkle extra cinnamon, butter, and warm maple syrup on top of your french toast. Enjoy!

Around Town: The Grey Dog, New York City

I found The Grey Dog when I was wandering around one sunny day. As I passed it on the street, I made a mental note to come back after looking inside at the charming interior and delicious menu on the walls. The Grey Dog is a great little place to meet up with friends for a quick bite, or just to eat and read on your own. The food has been great the past two times I’ve gone (breakfast and lunch). My favorite part about The Grey Dog is that it is off the main street, so the ambiance is calmer for a cafe in the City.

Setting: Charming, cozy, and spacious

Good for: Breakfast and lunch with family and friends, going solo

What to order: Lemonade, Egg Sandwich with Cheese on a Croissant, Irish Oatmeal, Grilled Chicken Press with Fresh Mozzarella, Pesto & Roasted Tomato, and Roast Beef Press with Swiss, Sauteed Onions, Horseradish Sauce & Au Jus

Downsides: Waiting in line to order and then finding a table (though this makes it more casual, which is nice)

Recommend: Going for breakfast – it is quieter and there are fewer people

Flavor of the Month: Raspberry

{1} Raspberry Fruit Tart  {2} Homemade Raspberry Jam  {3} Raspberry Ice Cream  {4} Raspberry Coffee Cake with Cinnamon Streusel Topping  {5} Raspberry Limeade

Raspberries are an excellent fruit for breakfast dishes and dessert items, particularly because of their tart yet sweet flavor. Whether you want to use then to make jam for warm English muffins or as a fresh topping on frozen yogurt, raspberries have proven over and over that they are a versatile and simple fruit. The only tricky thing with raspberries is that they perish quickly, so you’ll want to use them right away. Raspberries are also very delicate, so use light water pressure when rinsing them and pat dry.

Not only are raspberries delicious, but they are a great source of vitamin c, manganese, riboflavin, and the antioxidant ellagic acid, which appears to have some anti-cancer properties. Raspberries are usually in-season around mid-summer, so eat up while they’re ripe!

Around Town: Jeannine’s, Santa Barbara

During my long weekend drive up the northern coast, I made a stop in Santa Barbara for the morning. Since I am a breakfast person, it was important to find a place that served a breakfast for champions, especially since I had a long drive ahead of me. Jeannine’s Restaurant is a favorite among locals, which was clear after observing many customers saying hello to one another by their first names. Jeannine’s is a charming place to eat, and the food definitely made the visit worth it.
