Around Town: Hiarata Bokujo – Tokyo, Japan

a

During a recent trip to Japan, I stumbled across Hirata Bokujo, a small restaurant that served the most delicious tonkatsu I’ve ever had in my life. Tonkatsu is a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet, often served with shredded cabbage and a sauce to dip the cutlet in. You can’t go wrong with anything you order on the menu because it all tastes so fresh and is guaranteed to be filling. With only 19 seats total (2 tables and bar seating), Hirata Bokujo is quiet and relaxing, with jazz music softly playing in the background to create an ambiance that easily beats out many American restaurants with the Top 50 hits blasting.

With hot tea to start, customers make their own tonkatsu dipping sauce by grinding sesame seeds against a textured bowl and adding a sauce of their choice. I’ve always loved tonkatsu with sauce, so making my own exactly to my liking only further enhanced the meal. Complete with miso soup and a steaming bowl of white rice, this lunch ranks high on my list. Blending in with the other restaurants lining the street, keep an eye out for the big red sign in the front.

Around Town: Asiate, New York City

aWhen it comes time to celebrating something, dining at a nice restaurant is such a treat. New York City’s Asiate at the Mandarin Oriental is a great place to dine when you want to celebrate, have a private meal, or just enjoy good food and an incredible view of Manhattan. It is one of the greatest views of Central Park and the gorgeous city skyline. Not only that, but the food is seriously good – the brunch is not to be missed. With a steaming cup of hot chocolate, freshly baked croissants, and waffles that may just be my all-time favorite, Asiate is truly a delight.

Around Town: Fonuts, Los Angeles

5

If you like donuts, cupcakes, or cake, you will love Fonuts, a Los Angeles-based bakery that sells doughnuts that are baked and/or steamed, never fried. Even though these desserts are ‘doughnuts,’ they taste just like cupcakes (with holes in the middle). Regardless of how they are made, they are delicious. There are unique flavors, such as Maple Bacon, Cheddar, Rosemary Olive Oil, and Strawberry Buttermilk, among many, many more. These fonuts are the perfect way to top off a late brunch downtown. It can be tough to choose which fonut to buy, so try the mini fonuts for $7 and you’ll get to try a little bit of all everything.

Around Town: Molten Chocolate Cakery, Seattle

a

Seattle is filled with unique little shops tucked behind tree-lined streets, so when I found Molten Chocolate Cakery, I could not have been more pleased. The cakery is decorated with charming trinkets and cozy wooden tables and chairs, and the chocolate aroma greets you at the door. I was tempted to order everything on the menu because they had one of the best selections of desserts I have seen in a long time: milkshakes, cake, cookies, pudding, ice cream…tell me when to stop. Order one of their thick milkshakes, rich chocolate molten lava cakes, or gooey cookies and you’ll have yourself a decadent afternoon treat. I am such a fan of this place, and the next time I am in Seattle craving molten chocolate cake (which is almost always), you’ll find me here.

P.S. Since this week seems to be chocolate-themed, check out Chocolate Croissants for more sweetness.

Around Town: Golden Unicorn, New York City

Mindy Project

During my trip to New York City a couple of weekends ago, I made sure to stop by Golden Unicorn in Chinatown for a dim sum lunch. I am always looking for great dim sum, so when I heard Mindy Kaling mention this restaurant in her show, The Mindy Project, obviously I had to see what it was all about! While some of the dishes arrived lukewarm, overall the ingredients tasted fresh. There was also a really great variety of dim sum dishes and desserts, which I always appreciate.

The restaurant was decorated in an authentic Asian style with tables very close to one another. Golden Unicorn has a pretty amazing system – as soon as we were finished eating, the table was cleared in seconds and another group was eating by the time we were at the elevators. Even though dim sum restaurants are typically noisy and crowded, I love the carts full of dim sum rolling by the tables – I find it not only charming in its own way, but it means you can have food within minutes of sitting down. And whenever I go for dim sum, I’m always ready to eat.

For all the time I have spent in New York City, it’s hard to believe I haven’t stumbled upon Golden Unicorn yet. I tried Dim Sum Go Go, which is right across the street, but I don’t recommend it because there are not as many options and there are no dim sum carts (again, one of the best parts of the whole experience). If you’re looking for good dim sum in New York City, give Golden Unicorn a shot. However, be warned of the fast pace and pushy crowds.

Around Town: Cliff’s Edge, Los Angeles

b

Cliff’s Edge Restaurant in Silver Lake is the epitome of adorable. With a tree-house style seating arrangement (there are different levels of tables that are surrounded by trees), colorful pillows that stand out against the natural background, and dinner by candlelight (when you go in the evening), Cliff’s Edge is, again, simply adorable. It was difficult to decide between the appetizer and entrée offerings since everything looked delicious, but you probably can’t go wrong with anything you order.

With Valentine’s Day next week, Cliff’s Edge is a romantic and charming restaurant for date night or for a friends night out. They are even offering a Valentine’s Day menu, so make your reservations now!

All Things Lavender

Lavender Farm 1

I’ve always enjoyed the scent of lavender. When I heard about the Ali’i Kula Lavender farm in Maui, I couldn’t not go. The lavender farm is a beautiful stretch of land overlooking the ocean and beaches. Strolling through the gardens on a sunny day is the equivalent of paradise. Not only were the fields gorgeous, but the lavender products in the gift shop were beyond delightful. Products included lavender soap, oil, eye masks, lotions, shampoos, and satchels. There were also food items such as scones, brownies, tea, butter, and honey.

To my surprise, I learned that lavender has many incredible uses. Lavender oil serves as an antifungal, it can be used on cuts and insect bites, it helps you relax, and it is often used to treat insomnia. For all those uses, a $12.00 bottle sounds like a win-win. For an affordable and relaxing morning or afternoon, visiting the Ali’i Kula Lavender farm is a decision you will not regret.

If you’re in Maui, also check out Surfing Goat Dairy for another amazing afternoon!

Around Town: Icon Grill, Seattle

On a busy corner in the heart of downtown Seattle, Icon Grill is easily spotted with its big and bold sign. If you’ve seen the movie, Life or Something Like It (2002), starring Angelina Jolie, then Icon Grill may look familiar to you. The interior of the restaurant, however, is different than what it looked like 10 years ago. On an overcast day (that’s Seattle for you), I took a trip downtown to dine at Icon Grill and see what it was all about.  I ordered the Prime Rib Dip Melt, French Onion soup with a salad, and the Parmesan Lemon Sole.  The food wasn’t spectacular, but it’s a good place to go if you want a break from walking around and seeing the sights since it is conveniently located.

If you find yourself in Pike Place Market, try the Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar (which made an appearance in Sleepless in Seattle).

Around Town: Wienerkonditoriet – Stockholm, Sweden

During a morning shopping trip in Stockholm, I made a quick pastry stop into Wienerkonditoriet. I was on the hunt for a kanelbulle, a Swedish cinnamon bun. When I finally found the sweet treat, and after ordering it in very poor Swedish, I couldn’t wait to try it. I have read that kanelbulles are the next level Cinnabon, which is a very big statement to make. However, when I tried the kanelbulle, I understood. While Cinnabons are warm, super sweet, and melt in your mouth, kanelbulles taste more like Christmas, with an interesting spice that adds depth to its sweetness. Instead of an icing glaze, kanelbulles have a nib sugar sprinkled over the top.

Setting: Comfortable, convenient

Good for: Quick pastry stop, sitting down to read

What to order: Kanelbulle, other delicious pastries

Downsides: The inside is a little dark

Recommend: Trying a little bit of everything

Around Town: ABC Kitchen, New York City

I loved ABC Kitchen the minute I walked in. The outside of the restaurant is not flashy, so it is easy to walk right by. I’ve gone a couple of times for brunch, which is a great time to go (but a difficult time to get a table). The food is as local and organic as possible, and everything tastes fresh and flavorful. I’ve tried the french toast with cherries, seasonal donuts, and Eggs Benedict with flying pigs farm ham, and my sister swears by the housemade yogurt and granola with housemade jam. ABC Kitchen is definitely worth going to if you are in NYC. If you can’t get in, I recommend trying The Standard Grill.

· · ·

Setting: Intimate yet spacious, earthy, clean

Good for: Family brunch, dinner with friends, date night

What to order: Eggs Benedict, housemade yogurt and granola with housemade jam

Downsides: Reservation difficulty (mainly for brunch)

Recommend: Reserving a table in advance or arriving when it opens to get a seat, ordering a main dish and sharing a smaller dish with your dining partner
