The Movie Collection: Earth Day Movies

earth day

1. Erin Brockovich (2000) | 2. March of the Penguins (2005) | 3. Earth (2007)
4. The Day After Tomorrow (2004) | 5. Oceans (2009)

Happy Earth Day! There are a lot of reasons to love our earth, including the incredible landscapes, variety of fascinating animals, and all the natural resources Mother Nature provides. However, it is because of these very reasons that we need to protect our earth. These are just a few of the movies that cover earth topics – some documentary, one based on a true story, and one completely fictional. Celebrate today by watching one of these films, or a similar earth-related flick. And of course, turn off the lights when you are not in the room, unplug your electronics, turn the water off when you’re brushing your teeth, and recycle! What are your favorite Earth Day movies?

‘Best Picture’ Bucket List

oscars

Every year I make The Oscars a priority. For the past two years, I have gone to a Mexican restaurant with huge HD TVs with my friends to watch the final award show of the season. This is always a great option because we do not have televisions in our rooms, and we can eat and get work done during the commercial breaks (well, we can try). Yesterday’s show was really entertaining, and Seth MacFarlane reminded the world how talented he is.

One of my long-term movie goals is to watch all of the Academy Award Best Picture winners. Once I get through those, I will then attempt to watch all of the Best Picture nominees, but that won’t be anytime soon. After yesterday’s big winner, I have a total of 85 films to watch. So far, I have seen 25. I know that’s really weak, and I intend on tackling this goal as soon as I have some free time.

Below I have listed all of the past Oscar winners; I have crossed out the ones I have already seen…which Best Picture winners have you seen?

Top 10 Movies of 2012

intouchables behind the scenes

{A behind-the-scenes look at the making of ‘The Intouchables’}

This is the final post of 2012 – I can’t believe how quickly the year flew (as usual). Naturally, to celebrate the coming of 2013, I have rounded up the top 10 movies of 2012 – in no particular order – with 2 words that describe the way I feel about them. I wanted to do Top 12 movies, but when it came time to make this list, I realized I have not seen many of the movies that came out this year. Instead, I watched a lot of movies from the late 1960s to the present. Also, these are only movies that I have actually seen, since it would not make sense to rate a movie I have not watched (yet). I am still playing catch-up on a ton of movies this winter break - crossing off movies on the list every day! What movies did you love in 2012?

1.  The Intouchables (Released in the USA in 2012)
Hilarious and moving.

2. Lincoln
Inspiring and historical.

3. Moonrise Kingdom
Magical and youthful.

4. Argo
Intense and thrilling.

5. Headhunters (Released in USA in 2012 – the book, written by Jo Nesbo, is even better!)
Suspenseful and smart.

6. The Avengers
Exciting and fun.

7. Rust and Bone
Emotional and heavy.

8. Seeking Asian Female
Insightful and a little bit creepy (more than 2 words, but 2 adjectives nonetheless).

9. Looper
Trippy and unexpected.

10. This Means War  (I had to have a romantic comedy on here somewhere!)
Reese Witherspoon. I realize this is a noun, but what can I say, she just makes the movie. Okay…so does Chris Pine.

6 Things to Do Over Winter Break

xmas

To be honest, I get a little bit restless during my holiday break. It’s weird not having a schedule or routine, or having assigned busy work. To fill the hours of the long cold days, here are some fun ideas for a long weekend or month-long break (enjoy it, undergrads!)…

1. Start that neglected television marathon. While you may have been keeping up with shows during the fall semester, there was never a good time to start a full-on marathon with shows such as Homeland, Downton Abbey, or Dexter. However, now that you have a couple of free weeks, this would be a good time to start those shows!

2. Take a trip to the movie theater. There are some incredible movies coming out this winter. I personally can’t wait for Les Miserables, This is 40, Django Unchained, Promised Land, and $ellebrity.

3. Read an unassigned book. This winter I am looking forward to reading Anna Karenina (and then I’ll watch the movie), Goodbye Cinema, Hello Cinephilia, The Kitchen House, and The Night Circus.

4. Try a new recipe. Hone those baking skills this winter, or try a challenging recipe that has intimidated you for months.

5. Plan a movie night. Whip up your favorite cookies and drinks, pop in a movie, and enjoy a comfortable night with friends or family.

6. Make your own movie. With apps such as 8mm Vintage Camera, iMovie for iPhone, and Paper Camera, you can document your winter activities without breaking the bank!

Have a very Merry Christmas tomorrow!

Fall Movie Soundtrack Favorites

This autumn, I have been busy watching a lot of movies – some that are old favorites, some that were completely new to me. I have made a playlist of the catchy tunes from these films that stood out to me.

It’s pretty great when movies use music to emphasize emotions or plot points.  Soft and calm songs that melt into the background can be appropriate in certain situations and scenes, as well. This playlist contains movies that are autumn-oriented, and they are perfect for the last couple of days of the season before the transition into winter.

You can expect a holiday movie soundtrack playlist in December, as I will be undoubtedly be watching lots of movies next month, too. Enjoy!

A Dash of Cinema’s Fall Movie Soundtrack Favorites:

1. Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours – Stevie Wonder {You’ve Got Mail}
2. Don’t Get Around Much Anymore - Harry Connick Jr. {When Harry Met Sally}
3. Dream - Roy Orbison {You’ve Got Mail}
4. It Had to be You - Isham Jones {Annie Hall}
5. Somebody’s Baby - Andru Donalds {Good Will Hunting}
6. Ain’t No Sunshine - Bill Withers {Notting Hill}
7. When You Say Nothing At All - Ronan Keating {Notting Hill}
8. Only Time - Enya {Sweet November}
9. Continental Trailways Blues - Steve Earl {Planes, Trains, and Automobiles}
10. The Puppy Song - Harry Nilsson {You’ve Got Mail}

What are you treating yourself to this season?

Mad World

I have always been fascinated with what goes on behind the scenes of movies and T.V. shows, from the development process to the set creation. I love these off-screen photos of the cast of Mad Men. I just recently got into the show after initially finding it slow. There has been so much hype about the 5th season debut and the controversial ads plastered all over New York City, so naturally my interest was sparked and I gave the show another chance.  I am only on Season 2, so this summer I will be catching up with the rest of the seasons (thank you, Netflix). I also love how prevalent food is in each episode. Whether a family is eating dinner or hosting a party, food (and drinks) are common to see.

It’s so funny seeing the actors with their Macbooks…
