It’s no secret that I love breakfast. Yes, there are a variety of foods to choose from, but just think of the liquids: juices, coffee, tea, milk, Bellinis, smoothies. Biting into a warm waffle covered in syrup, spreading butter and honey on a freshly toasted piece of bread, or wiping up the last bit of egg yolk with smoked ham – breakfast is simply the best. While I could eat breakfast at any time of the day, I prefer it just after the sun has risen. If I’m looking out over the Italian coast, peering over a Parisian balcony, or waking up to breakfast in bed? Even better.

Delicious Pantone Pairings
These Pantone Pairings by David Schwen are so clever. I can’t decide which one is my favorite – it’s a tie between the milk and cookie pairing and the bacon and eggs pairing. The idea is simple yet leaves room for the imagination to run wild with food pairing ideas.
The texture of the ingredients really elevate the visuals. I get hungry just looking at them.

Flavor of the Month: Basil
1. Lime, Basil, and Mandarin Salad | 2. Creamy Lemon Basil Pasta | 3. Brie & Basil Grilled Cheese on Chocolate Bread | 4. Pineapple Basil Sorbet | 5. Basil & Cucumber Martini
When it comes to herbs, you can’t go wrong with basil. Whether you are seasoning sauces, making pesto, or simply using basil as a garnish, the versatility of this herb is seriously impressive. Not only is basil delicious, but it has incredible health benefits, some of which include: protecting the body from premature aging, strong antibacterial capabilities that could help prevent bacterial infections, and improving blood flow because of its high source of magnesium. As if you need more convincing, basil also helps with indigestion and stomach cramps. Next time you want to top off a pasta dish or salad, don’t be afraid to sprinkle a couple more basil leaves on top.

Around Town: Golden Unicorn, New York City
During my trip to New York City a couple of weekends ago, I made sure to stop by Golden Unicorn in Chinatown for a dim sum lunch. I am always looking for great dim sum, so when I heard Mindy Kaling mention this restaurant in her show, The Mindy Project, obviously I had to see what it was all about! While some of the dishes arrived lukewarm, overall the ingredients tasted fresh. There was also a really great variety of dim sum dishes and desserts, which I always appreciate.
The restaurant was decorated in an authentic Asian style with tables very close to one another. Golden Unicorn has a pretty amazing system – as soon as we were finished eating, the table was cleared in seconds and another group was eating by the time we were at the elevators. Even though dim sum restaurants are typically noisy and crowded, I love the carts full of dim sum rolling by the tables – I find it not only charming in its own way, but it means you can have food within minutes of sitting down. And whenever I go for dim sum, I’m always ready to eat.
For all the time I have spent in New York City, it’s hard to believe I haven’t stumbled upon Golden Unicorn yet. I tried Dim Sum Go Go, which is right across the street, but I don’t recommend it because there are not as many options and there are no dim sum carts (again, one of the best parts of the whole experience). If you’re looking for good dim sum in New York City, give Golden Unicorn a shot. However, be warned of the fast pace and pushy crowds.

Flavor of the Month: Pomegranate
1. Pomegranate Salsa | 2. Cucumber Pomegranate Cocktail | 3. Pomegranate Kiwi Ice Cream 4. Citrus, Chicken, and Goat Cheese Pizza | 5. Double Chocolate Pomegranate Cupcakes
6. Coconut, Pomegranate, and Lime Kanten
While there are many exciting events in February, Valentine’s Day is one of the most celebrated holidays around the world. In honor of love, one of the major associations of Valentine’s Day, pomegranate is February’s Flavor of the Month.
Did you know that in certain cultures, pomegranates symbolize love and fertility? In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the pomegranate fruit is referenced. In Act 3, Scene 5, Juliet says to Romeo, “Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day. / It was the nightingale, and not the lark, / That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear. / Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate tree. / Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.” In this section, pomegranate symbolizes love - from true love to innocent love to forbidden love.
Pomegranates are not only delicious, but they have a beautiful red color that makes the seeds stand out in meals and desserts. If you’re looking to make a treat for yourself, to cook a meal for a loved one, or just to eat this sweet fruit’s seeds on its own, pomegranates provide diverse and tasty flavors that you’ll absolutely love. Will you eat pomegranate this month?

New Orleans-Inspired Super Bowl Snacks
1. French Quarter Beignets | 2. Bananas Foster French Toast | 3. Shrimp Po’Boy
4. Granny’s Gulf Gumbo | 5. Mint Julep | 6. New Orleans Jambalaya
On Sunday, February 3, the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens will be playing for the championship title in the Super Bowl XLVII. This year, the Super Bowl will take place in the amazing city of New Orleans. While I usually watch the game every year, I’m a little bitter about it since the Seahawks were thisclose to making it. Whether you are going to the actual game or watching it from the comfort of your own living room, here are 6 (the score of a touchdown) New Orleans-inspired snacks that will make your football-filled afternoon even better.
If you’re going to New Orleans for the Super Bowl on Sunday, definitely make sure to eat at The Three Muses…it is just incredible. Also, Cafe Du Monde - obviously!

Flavor of the Month: Champagne

1. Sparkling Champagne Cupcakes | 2. Champagne Jello Shots | 3. Champagne Risotto
4. Champagne Brownies | 5. Champagne Panna Cotta with Sugared Grapes
Happy New Year! I hope you celebrated 2013 with loved ones and welcomed the coming year with open arms. One flavor that I’m sure many of you enjoyed a couple of nights ago was the taste of champagne. However, instead of just imbibing this fizzy liquid, champagne is also delicious in many meal and dessert recipes. At the top of my list: Sparkling Champagne Cupcakes. While I’ve used wine in my dishes, cooking and baking with champagne will be new for me…but isn’t that what the new year is all about anyways?

6 Things to Do Over Winter Break

To be honest, I get a little bit restless during my holiday break. It’s weird not having a schedule or routine, or having assigned busy work. To fill the hours of the long cold days, here are some fun ideas for a long weekend or month-long break (enjoy it, undergrads!)…
1. Start that neglected television marathon. While you may have been keeping up with shows during the fall semester, there was never a good time to start a full-on marathon with shows such as Homeland, Downton Abbey, or Dexter. However, now that you have a couple of free weeks, this would be a good time to start those shows!
2. Take a trip to the movie theater. There are some incredible movies coming out this winter. I personally can’t wait for Les Miserables, This is 40, Django Unchained, Promised Land, and $ellebrity.
3. Read an unassigned book. This winter I am looking forward to reading Anna Karenina (and then I’ll watch the movie), Goodbye Cinema, Hello Cinephilia, The Kitchen House, and The Night Circus.
4. Try a new recipe. Hone those baking skills this winter, or try a challenging recipe that has intimidated you for months.
5. Plan a movie night. Whip up your favorite cookies and drinks, pop in a movie, and enjoy a comfortable night with friends or family.
6. Make your own movie. With apps such as 8mm Vintage Camera, iMovie for iPhone, and Paper Camera, you can document your winter activities without breaking the bank!
Have a very Merry Christmas tomorrow!
